My Coconut Oil Confession

Monday, July 18, 2011

Happy Manic Monday BiancaFacers!

I told you I took a hiatus from blogging but I'm baaack!  The title of this latest blog post is something that has been on my mind a lot lately.  Before I cut off my chemically relaxed hair, I didn't know much about natural anything, let alone foods, moisturizers, etc.

However, since I started reading, and watching ladies on youtube share their knowledge I've learned so much about things I put in my body and on it.  No, I'm not a vegetarian, pescetarian, vegan thingamajiggy "yet."  I still eat everything from the rooter to the tooter.  But I digress.

Coconut oil is something I started seeing on every blog and youtuber's page over three years ago when I cut off all my hair.  The first thing I read was that coconut oil was an amazing moisturizer for the hair.  So off I went to the store, to buy coconut oil.

I couldn't wait to try some on my hair. Well I did. I HATED IT!!! I was disappointed. I felt I was lied to and wondered what all the naturals were raving about.  But I didn't give up. I proceeded to purchase refined, and unrefined, organic this, and all different brands. For lack of a better way to describe it, the stuff just sat on my hair like lard. (Think Jherri Curl juice)

Coconut oil, no matter what brand will not absorb into my hair.  It just doesn't work, PERIOD. I used it on my daughter's hair and it melts like butter into her hair and scalp with no greasy feeling AT ALL. I was just amazed at the difference when I applied it to her hair.

But the kicker is, my skin loves it!!!  As a matter of fact, I get raves from people when they hug me about how soft my skin feels.(Yeah I'm a hugger) So in an effort to share the love, I'll show you my favorite brand. (see below)

I purchase my coconut oil from my local Whole Foods Store. Please note, I do not use the coconut oil on my face. I use it on my body only. I used Baby Oil in the past and this doesn't compare.  Let me know if you try it!

Sounds like we've experienced the same thing! One of my #naturabeauties told me about the benefits of using Coconut Oil on the hair so I went out and bought it at my local grocery store.

After using it for a whole week, I noticed that all it did was make my hair really greasy. However, it did work well on my dry feet.

I ended up giving the rest of the oil to my sister.

Yes I do love it on my ashy feet too! lol But sadly it didn't work on my hair no matter what brand I purchased.
